:: Answers Q: What does a diamond with a question mark represent?A: A diamond (or square) with a question mark in the middle is not an, but a 'replacement character.' It is displayed whenever a character is not recognized in a document or webpage. Most often, a is not recognized because the is incorrect or is not supported. Text documents and webpages often define a specific character set, or 'charset,' which determines how characters are interpreted.
For instance, a webpage may define the charset to be 'ISO-8859-1.' If the text contains characters that are unique to the 'UTF-8' character set, they will not be displayed. Additionally, even if a special character like the copyright symbol (©) belongs to the ISO-8859-1 character set, it may not be displayed correctly since the character encoding is incorrect.
Instead of displaying an unknown character as a blank space, word processors and web browsers may display it as a replacement character, or a diamond with a question mark in the middle.Since different character sets use the same codes for standard letters and numbers, most characters will still be displayed correctly even if the wrong character set is defined for a document. Special characters, such as symbols, uncommon punctuation marks, and asian characters are the most likely to be replaced with replacement characters.NOTE: While the diamond with a question mark is not an emoticon, it is still possible to use the replacement character as part of an emoticon (e.g., ^^ might be a bird).
However, it is best not to use the replacement character in emoticons since people may think it is supposed to represent a different symbol.

Contents.History attributes an early form of the modern mark in to. Truss describes the punctus interrogativus of the late 8th century as, 'a lightning flash, striking from right to left'. (The punctuation system of, current through the, used only simple dots at various heights.)This earliest question mark was a decoration of one of these dots, with the 'lightning flash' perhaps meant to denote, and perhaps associated with early musical notation like. Another possibility is that it was originally a or, as in ' ', one of many wavy or more or less slanted marks used in texts for denoting things such as, which would later become various. My HP touchpad is out of warranty. When I try to power it on it shows a battery icon with question mark in it. When it is connected to a charger the light flashes on the center button.
I have tried all solutions posted on the web, with different button combinations, leaving it on charge for more than a day, using different cables, trying to leave it connected to a computer, etc. Everything brings back the battery icon with question mark and cannot do anything more.Connecting to a computer with USB, makes the center button lights to flash, but cannot access the file system thru USB.I thought changing the battery, but not sure if that will fix the issue. Is there a way to reset to factory defaults? Please let me know if there is anyway to fix this.
That's the UNICODE replacement character. It's used to represent invalid or unknown characters. The best way I know of to find it or get rid of it in SQL is to check for it using a binary collation. For example Declare @Foo Table(PK int primary key identity, MyData nvarchar(20));Insert @Foo(MyData) Values (N'abc'), (N'abc'), (N'abc')Select. From @Foo Where MyData Like N'%%'- Find rows with the characterSelect.
From @FooWhere CharIndex(nchar(65533) COLLATE Latin1GeneralBIN2, MyData) 0- Update rows replacing character with a!Update @Fooset MyData = Replace(MyData, nchar(65533) COLLATE Latin1GeneralBIN2, '!' )Select. From @FooTom. I'm not sure how much help I can be.
The above has worked for me in the few times I've needed it. It's looks like you have several different invalid unicode characters. And I suspect those blanks that got converted aren't really spaces, but some other (probably invalid) character. The only thing I can suggest is to try to find out what is the real value in the positions that are causing you problems. You can do that by using substring and the unicode functions. So for example,if you had Declare @Foo Table(PK int primary key identity, MyData nvarchar(20));Insert @Foo(MyData) Values (N'abc'), (N'abc'), (N'abc')Select. From @Fooyou can see there is an invalid character in the third character of the rows with PK=2.
You can find out what the 16 bit unicode value is by running Select Unicode(Substring(MyData, 3, 1)) From @Foo Where PK = 2In this case, you will get 65533 which is why I used nchar(65533) to do the replace. I suspect that you will find the ones that did not get converted have some other value and you will have to detirmine what those value(s) are and run multiple replacesto fix all the values.
The spaces that the above code converted probably aren't real spaces. You can check that by doing the same sort of substring, unicode trick. If it's a real space, unicode will return 32.Hopefully, someone else will have a better or easier idea.Tom. That's the UNICODE replacement character.
